Start here, because it stops the room. One Brown class aced a take-home midterm at 96%. Weeks later, the same students sat an in-person final and averaged 48.6%, the lowest the professor had ever seen. The supervised score was barely half the unsupervised one. That gap is the whole story of this deck.

This is not a slow rollout. In one year, students using any AI tool went from two thirds to nine in ten. The sharper number is graded work: use on assessments that count leapt from 53% to 88%. Schools and parents have not had time to react before the behavior became the norm.

Why does the adoption number matter so much? Because tech in daily life does not retreat. The internet climbed from under one in ten Americans to more than nine in ten and never came back down. Whatever AI does to learning, good or bad, we should assume it is permanent, not a fad to wait out.

Smartphones felt sudden, and they took eleven years to reach nine in ten teens, roughly six points a year. Student AI use added 26 points in a single year. That is why schools feel blindsided: this is the fastest classroom technology shift on record, and the last one, smartphones, coincided with test scores that peaked in 2013 and drifted down.

Money moves before proof. One forecaster puts the AI-education market at about $7 billion today and near $137 billion by 2035, roughly 34% growth a year. Hold that number against the best-documented classroom-tech precedent, one-laptop programs, which moved scores just 0.15 standard deviations. The capital is betting on a payoff the research has not yet earned.

AI does not hollow out every learner equally. Here is the hinge of the whole debate: it is not the tool, it is the timing. In a three-month chess study, students who could summon AI whenever they wanted gained just 30%. A Berkeley analysis of 500,000 grades found A's in writing- and coding-heavy courses jumped 13 points after ChatGPT, about 30% above 2022. Crucially, the lift came from homework, not exams. When the graded work is the part AI can do, the transcript climbs while the learning underneath it does not.

Be honest about the timeline. The sharpest math drop PISA has ever recorded, 17 points, happened between 2018 and 2022, and the test was sat before ChatGPT launched. AI inherits a slide it did not start. That complicates the blame, but it also means AI is landing on a system already weakening, not a healthy one.

The strongest evidence for the upside comes from a World Bank randomized trial in Nigeria. This is the promise: not a chatbot that answers homework, but a guide that teaches, aimed at the students with the least support.

Put the cause beside the effect. AI's success on a real-world software benchmark exploded from 4.4% to 71.7% in a single year, a sixteen-fold jump. In the same window, the entry roles most exposed to it started shrinking: US junior software down about 20%, UK accountants 29%, designers 28%. And the length of tasks AI can finish alone is still doubling every seven months.

The macro story is reassuring: the World Economic Forum projects 170 million new jobs and 92 million destroyed by 2030, a net gain of 78 million. But a net number hides where the pain lands. The roles being destroyed are disproportionately entry-level, which means today's students absorb the losses while the gains accrue to others later.

Outside of the 2009 and 2020 shocks, US youth unemployment had been trending down for years, reaching a low of 7.95% in 2023. Since then it has ticked back up to 9.34%, a roughly 17% rise from that floor. It is not proof AI did it, but the softening in the entry-level market is showing up in the macro data young workers live in.

The generation living through this is souring fast. In a single year, Gen Z excitement about AI fell 14 points to 22%, hopefulness dropped to 18%, and anger rose to 31%. Anger now outweighs hope. The young people AI is supposed to empower are increasingly the ones most wary of it.

Fear is spreading as fast as the tool itself. In one year, the share of new graduates who worry AI could replace entry-level jobs jumped from 64% to 89%. That 25-point leap almost exactly matches the 26-point single-year surge in student AI adoption. The more they use it, the more they fear what it will do to their first job.

The research behind this deck

AI flooded classrooms faster than any tech before it. The latest 2026 studies show homework scores rising while real, tested learning falls. Yet supervised AI tutoring can lift the weakest students most. The dividing line is how it is used.
