Start at the top of the world. Nepal hands its workers roughly 35 public holidays every year, a full nine ahead of Iran or Myanmar. That is nearly three times what the United States offers. Before we argue about cost, look at just how wide the human range really is.

The United States grants just 11 federalholidays, below the world's typical 13.Sources: Pew Research Center. (2026, February 12). Which countries have the most and fewest public holidays?
Americans often assume they take plenty of time off. They do not. The federal calendar holds 11 public holidays, two short of the global norm of 13. That gap is the backdrop for everything that follows, because the biggest economy is also one of the stingiest with days off.
Estados Unidos otorga solo 11feriados federales, por debajo deltípico mundial de 13.Fuentes: Pew Research Center. (2026, February 12). Which countries have the most and fewest public holidays?

Now zoom into Latin America and the region splits in two. Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Peru all sit at 16 to 18 days. At the bottom, Mexico grants just 7, fewer than half of Colombia's total. Same neighborhood, wildly different bargains between work and rest.

Line the region's leader up against the world's industrial giants and the picture flips. Colombia's 18 holidays beat India, Japan and China, and land at exactly double Germany's 9. The countries that run the global economy are the ones granting the fewest days off, not the most.

Zoom out to whole regions and the pattern holds. Asia averages 14.5 public holidays, South America 13.5, both above the global typical of 13. North America and Africa sit lowest. These are rough estimates, but they confirm the regional habit: some parts of the world simply build in more rest.

(2025). The aggregate effects of public holidays.
So what does a day off actually cost? Research spanning more than 200 countries finds a real, measurable drag: each lost working day trims output growth by roughly a fifth of a point. It is not a rounding error. Multiply it across a generous calendar and the drag becomes real money.

Germany's number crunchers say a single weekday holiday costs between 0.055% and 0.28% of a year's GDP. The US estimate lands near 0.1%. Small percentages, big money: Britain pegged one extra 2022 jubilee bank holiday at 2.4 billion pounds of lost output. A day off is never free.

Here is the twist the cost side misses. A day off does not just subtract output, it redirects spending. The Fourth of July alone pumps about $15.5 billion into the economy in a single week, roughly 62% of one holiday's estimated $25 billion output cost. The two measures are different, but money moves rather than vanishes.

Scale that give-back up to a whole season and the number gets huge. US holiday-season retail was forecast to break $1 trillion for the first time ever in 2025. That is the offset in one figure: the calendar's biggest cluster of days off is also its biggest engine of spending.
(2025, November 6). NRF expects holiday sales to surpass $1 trillion.

Give shoppers a reason and a break, and they pounce. On US sales-tax holidays overall daily spending rises 8%, but the standout is children's clothing, up an astonishing 193%. Holidays do not just move existing demand around, they pull spending forward and concentrate it into a burst.

Nowhere is the tourism payback clearer than Latin America's Easter week.

This is the punchline of the whole debate. Germany grants just 9 holidays and produces $93.81 an hour, more than four times Colombia's $21.35 on 18 holidays. Chile, with 17 days off, sits near the bottom too. Output per hour is about how developed an economy is, not how many days it rests.

The wellbeing case is not soft. In the biggest four-day-week trial ever run, burnout fell sharply and revenue held steady, even rising about 1.4% during the pilot. Rested workers do not automatically produce less. That is the tension underneath every argument to cut holidays for the sake of growth.

Cross-country research finds an inverted U: growth climbs as holidays rise, peaks around 9 to 12, then slips. Put our three headline countries on it and the story lands. The US's 11 sits neatly inside the sweet spot. Colombia's 18 overshoots, Mexico's 7 undershoots. More is not always better, and neither is less.

The research behind this deck

Latin America grants some of the world's most generous holiday calendars, Colombia's 18 against Mexico's 7. Each day off carries a real output cost, yet holidays pump billions back through retail, tourism and rest. The evidence points to a sweet spot near 9 to 12.
