Diversification narrows the organic yieldgapAverage organic-to-conventional yield gap by farming practice.Made for Cba Vallerez, by HanademiSources: Ponisio, L. C., et al. (2015). Diversification practices reduce organic to conventional yield gap. Proceedings of the Royal Society B,282, 20141396.Unitpercent19.2%All organic comparisons9%Multi-cropping8%Diverse rotations
Organic systems averaged a 19.2% yield gap. Diverse rotations narrowed it to 8%, while multi-cropping narrowed it to 9%. Diversity is not a guarantee, but it can materially improve the productivity trade-off.

Los sistemas orgánicos promediaron una brecha de rendimiento de 19,2%. Las rotaciones diversas la redujeron a 8% y los policultivos a 9%. La diversidad no es una garantía, pero puede mejorar de forma importante el equilibrio productivo.
The terms behind the argumentMade for Cba Vallerez, by HanademiLocal seedSeed maintained, selected or reproduced within a territory, often through farmer orcommunity networks.Quality-declared seedSeed produced under simplified assurance rules covering identity, purity, germination and health without full formal certification.Crop diversityVariation among crop species, varieties and genetic materials grown within a farm, territory or country.ResilienceThe capacity of a farming system to absorb shocks, continue producing and recover withoutlosing essential functions.UPOVAn international treaty system establishing intellectual-property rights for breeders ofqualifying new plant varieties.Farm-saved-seed exceptionA legal exception that may permit reuse of harvested material from aprotected variety under specified conditions.
6 technical terms carry much of the argument.

Food production rests on a narrow cropbaseCounts reported by FAO for cultivated, commercially significant and production-dominant plant species.Made for Cba Vallerez, by HanademiSources: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. (2019). The state of the world's biodiversity for food and agriculture.FAO.Unitplant speciesCultivated for food6,000Commercially significant200Supply 66% of output9
Human agriculture has cultivated more than 6,000 plant species for food. About 200 are commercially significant, while 9 supplied 66% of production by weight. A narrow production base makes usable diversity a form of risk capacity.

Food is not the majority of Chile’s merchandise imports. Its share nevertheless rose materially over the period. Local seed capacity cannot replace trade, but it can widen the routes available when external supply becomes costly or disrupted.
