This is the curve that changed startup expectations. Cursor moved from $100 million to $2 billion in reported annualized revenue in just 13 months. It proves that AI can compress the journey to enormous early revenue, but it does not yet prove durable retention or audited trailing revenue.

The AI Runtime review described sevenrecurring components, with the languagemodel as the smallest. This is an attributed architectural synthesis of named deployments, not establishedindustry evidence or a statistical finding. Stanford separately supports workflow, compliance, data, and judgment as potential moats, but not the exact seven-componenttaxonomy. Audit caveat: the adversarial audit flags this figure as contested/unverified.Read it as an estimate (see the appendix note).Sources: The AI Runtime. (2026, May 19). Vertical defensibility is not only the model. The AI Runtime review described seven recurring components in regulated production agents and called the language model the smallest. Treat this as a useful design lens from one newsletter, not a statistical industry finding.
(2026, May 19).
Glean’s engagement advantage depends onthe definitionCompany-reported weekday DAU/MAU versus a disputed 10% to 20% enterprise SaaS range.Made for Freddy Vega, by HanademiSources: Glean. Glean reported roughly 40% weekday DAU/MAU, compared with a claimed enterprise SaaS range of 10% to 20%. That would make engagement look exceptional. A competing benchmark reaches roughly 40% when it uses the same weekday adjustment, so the apparent advantage cannot be established without harmonized definitions.

The arithmetic is simple: 60% minus 25% equals exactly 35 percentage points. The interpretation is more important. In Bessemer’s selected archetypes, the fastest revenue machine gives up a large share of the margin associated with a durable software business.

Early speed is now abundant, so it is no longer the final filter. The stronger test is whether pricing expands with delivered value and whether serving that revenue leaves software-like margin. Vertical agents often fit that pattern, but a horizontal product can qualify too when it becomes embedded in daily work.

The research behind this deck

The first mile of AI software has become a sprint. Within one B2B benchmark, AI-native companies grew at a radically different early pace.
